At the 2018 ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston, Texas, Lutheran Campus Ministry Network (LuMin) is partnering with Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) to provide a unique opportunity for youth to help build the walls of two houses that will provide homes for two families in the Houston area after the Gathering is over.
Youth work with college and university students connected with Lutheran Campus Ministry (from various campuses across the country) and are supervised by staff from Lutheran Disaster Response and Lutheran Campus Ministry who are experienced in construction.
UPDATE: June 16, 2018 – All three days are nearly full. There are spots for one or two youth here and there (you will see any openings as you scroll through the times).
More spots may open up as groups make changes in their plans, and those spots will show on the sign up.
Hour-long shifts include:
15 minute orientation where youth learn a bit about Lutheran Campus Ministry and Lutheran Disaster Response, go over basic construction safety, get safety glasses, hammers and nails, and practice the skills they’ll need on the walls.
30 minutes helping to build by hammering nails, steadying boards for each other, hauling lumber, measuring boards, and whatever else needs to be done.
15 minute debriefing reflecting together on the experience. They will also have a chance to sign thank yous for donors who helped fund the supplies, and blessings for the homeowners.
No experience in construction or building is required. All equipment is supplied. We recommend youth wear closed-toe shoes. We ask that at least one advisor remains with a group of youth, but that youth get to do the nailing.
Shifts begin every half-hour from 9:30 am through 3:30 pm on Thursday and Friday. Shifts on Saturday are 9:30 am through 2:30 pm. There are spots for 20 youth in each shift, and they are one hour long.

Because of the size of these signups, you may find it easier to use your computer to sign up, rather than a smart phone.
