San Antonio: 10 Years of Community, Worship & Service

Tia Mathre-Adams, San Antonio, Texas

Our campus ministry in San Antonio is celebrating a decade of devotion this year! At our 2007 synod assembly, folks recognized that San Antonio was the only major city without a Lutheran Campus Ministry. Today, Lutheran Campus Ministry, San Antonio (LCM, SA) serves a ministry field of over 100,000 students across 31 institutions of higher education in the 7th largest city in the nation.

On any given Wednesday during the academic year, you’ll find us at St. John’s Lutheran fellowship hall nestled in downtown San Antonio across from LaVillita. A team of ladies from the church cooks and serves homemade dinners to about 30 students from University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), Trinity University, Our Lady of the Lake University, Incarnate Word University, San Antonio Community College, and Schreiner University (Kerrville, TX). After dinner, we have a chapel service. Students share conversations, play the piano, ping pong, cards, and board games for social interaction. For service outreach, we volunteer with Taking it to the Streets: Boerne. This group of believers gathers at the Church Under the Bridge every Saturday and serves dinner to over 200 homeless people.

We’re looking forward to participating in collaborative activities with our Region 4 friends in Austin and San Marcos soon.
